Blogging From A to Z Challenge: Gardening

Note 9/3/12: Was messing with my photo galleries and screwed up the links to the pictures so they aren't available any more.

Welcome to the next installment of the Blogging From A to Z Challenge: the letter G.

And it's Gardening!

I absolutely love flowers and gardening but I am a pretty haphazard gardener. I just put things in where I feel like it. I only halfway pay attention to whether the plant is a sun or shade lover. And I definitely do not create one of those fancy designed gardens that you always see on HGTV.

I absolutely have to have sunflowers in my garden every year because they're my favorite flower. So I go overboard with them. I also have to have marigolds, chrysanthemums, roses and my new love: irises. I've never had irises until we moved into this house and there were already some here. They're gorgeous, and easy. I love them. Otherwise, I just buy what makes me happy and attracts my eye in the store or Burpees catalog. I loooooove getting this in the mail. There have been several times I've been tempted to just plop on the sidewalk to pore through it. Below are some photos that I took in August 2010 of flowers in my garden. Enjoy.

  1. Looks like your garden was beautiful last year! I confess that as much as I love flowers and plants that my thumb is not very green...makes me sad. I'm with you on the sunflowers. They are just so cheerful. Nice post.

    1. Tracy - Thanks. I very carefully selected my photos so that only photos of plants that were alive and thriving showed. Haha :D

  2. I do appreciate a nice garden, the work that goes into it, the colours etc, but I definitely dont have a green thumb.

    1. Tina - I used to not have one. I started with cactus as house plants. Hard to kill those.

  3. I'm not very good with plants (I managed to kill a jade plant) but I do enjoy flowers on my porch which usually survive the summer. Yours are pretty :)

    1. mshatch - I've never had jade but until a few years ago I managed to kill everything.

  4. I love gardening! A few years ago we had a huge backyard, we turned half into a veggie garden and had a blast farming it. Roses are my favorites and those took up the back half of that yard. I really miss not having a yard...can't seem to keep anything alive in pots.

What is the big pink one (2nd row) called and is it really as big as it looks in the photo?

    1. Jenn - I think you're looking at the dianthus, it's about the size of a quarter. It's funny how when you take out anything to use as reference big flowers look tiny and tiny flowers look big.

  6. Beautiful flowers! Not having a garden is one of the things I hate about living in an apartment. I do have flower pots on my balcony, and last year I planted tomatoes, but it's not quite the same...better than nothing, though. I'm sure when I finally do have a house and a garden, I'll go crazy and just pick what catches my eye the way you do!

    1. Ruby, thanks. I haven't put out any this year either. The weather is too unpredictable until late in May. I have cleared out the beds of debris though. My perenials are starting to pop up.

    1. Jenny - I love the irises. They smell like licorice when they bloom.
